Today I read an instruction(Chinese version!) of a manual camera nealy 2 hours, and didn't figure out how to take a picture with it. The texts and illustrations are so confusing and can not communicate.
Information design can not be more important.

Reading Envision Information p12-35
I ♥ the stereo illustration on page 17, I think it is amazing because it does not only increase the amount of the data, but turns 2D to 3D, it increase the number of dimension by simply using two 2D images.
The example on page 16 indicate a "grave sin of information design" – directing attention more toward display than to the information it expresses.
When designing with information, I think the designer have to ask what the reader need to know and what they don not need. and make sure the important information grab the attention first. I think this is why information design usually do not have much decoration, because it needs to remove all the unnecessary information and focus on the one it want to say. If not, the design may cause confusion.
After read the charts from p 21-25, I believe that great graphs&charts based on great data.
The timetable for Java railroad line on p24-25 is great. It is in a flat form but contains so many information that can hardly explain by words. And it is not difficult to read and understand although it looks complicated.
